Have we seen the last of Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn Nets threads? According to a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic, Irving and the Nets are in an “impasse” about his future with the team.“But one of the most anticipated free-agency situations involves Brooklyn’s Kyrie Irving, who has a June 29 deadline on his $36.9 million player option for the 2022-23 season. However, multiple sources tell The Athletic that conversations about Irving’s future have gone stagnant between him and the Nets. An impasse currently exists among the parties that clears the way for the seven-time All-Star to consider the open marketplace, those sources said.”Irving can still continue playing with the Nets at least for another season, provided that he picks up his player option for the 2022-23 NBA campaign. If Irving exercises his option, he would be paid a guaranteed amount of $36.5 million for the next season. The Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and the Los Angeles Clippers are among the teams Charania mentioned who have an interest in acquiring Irving. For the Lakers, it’s going to be difficult to come up with a trade package that could equal Irving’s salary. The Knicks have a much better financial flexibility to land Irving via free agency, assuming of course that the point guard elects not to pick up his 2022-23 player option. There is still the chance that Irving decides to stick with the Nets and help Kevin Durant run the show for Brooklyn, which had an early exit from the 2022 NBA Playoffs. There should be more NBA trade rumors coming our way about Irving as the offseason gets deeper.
